Mica tape (also called micanite tape or mica insulation tape) is a roll of mica paper bonded to a backing material with epoxy or silicone resin, used as high-temperature electrical insulation. The mica paper may be natural phlogopite, calcined muscovite or synthetic mica, and the backing may be glass cloth, polyester, Kapton or PET. The tape form is used for wrapping coils, conductors and busbars; the thicker mica roll form is used for slot liners, barriers and form-wound coils in motors and generators. Kaxite supplies mica tape in 0.08–0.15 mm thickness with width from 4.5 mm to 1000 mm, and mica rolls in 0.2–0.8 mm thickness in 1000 mm standard width and 20–50 m length. Maximum continuous operating temperature is 800 °C (phlogopite), 900 °C (calcined muscovite) or 1000 °C (synthetic mica), with breakdown voltage above 10 kV/mm.
